Description

Putting on Tefillin is a written commandment of Torah received by Moshe Rabeynu on Mount Sinai. Chumash says to place signs and reminders on the hand and between the eyes in four places. Each of the passages where Torah speaks about the commandment of Tefillin is written by sofer on a klaf by special ink. The parshiot are placed in batim (special black boxes made of lather), on which black straps are tied. A pair of Tefillin should be put on. One is on the hand (hand Tefillin), and the second one is on the head (head Tefillin). The Tefillin is combination of parshiot, batim, and retzuot. Each of these three elements has specific Halachic requirements critical for performance of commandment of Tefillin.

Parshiot (handwritten holy texts inside the Tefillin)

Klaf (parchment)

Parshiot are written on klaf. The klaf is made by Jewish expert in the name of Tefillin according to main Halachic requirements. We usually use klaf avodat yad produced and distributed by Nafarstack under supervision of Baith Din Heidat Charidit. This is the most trusted kosher validation authority among ultraorthodox communities of Israel.

Sofer (scribe who writes parshiot)

Writing parshiot requires compliance with various Halachic requirements. Sofer is required to know these requirements and strictly follow them. Sofer must to learn how to write letter by letter and past a Halachic test to be certified. He has to retake the test every three years to be sure he did not forget the Halacha and to continue his certificate. Compliance with the Laws of writing, Lekadesh Tefillin and Shemot, Kesidran and Hack Tochot can be enforced by a sofer only. Many of these Laws cannot be verified by anybody else once parshiot  are written. A sofer sometimes has to work for a week for free to rewrite parshiot with mistake. Failure to comply with one of the critical Laws makes Tefillin  posul, and each of the blessings before putting on tefillin is bracha levatala. You should rely on sofer to be sure he knows and follows Halacha. The parshiot we put in Tefillin are written by charidy sofer certified by Lishkas HaKodesh (see a copy of the certificate on the right).

Batim (black leather boxes where parchments are placed)

The  parshiot are placed inside  batim. In contrast to the mezuzah batim that are not important for fulfillment of commandment of Mezuzah, batim of Tefillin are critical for the fulfillment of the commandment of Tefillin. Failure to comply with one of the critical rules of making batim makes it completely impossible to fulfill the commandment. The leather for these  batim is made in the name of  commandment of Tefillin. The three visible slots divide bait of the head Tefillin is into four sections. Each of four  parshiot is placed into separate section in the way that one parchment does not touch the other. The sections are completely separated one from another up to the bottom part of the bait in the way that it is possible to insert a thin knife blade between them. This important adornment of the commandment is called  Prudot legamrei. The Law of ribuah is accuratelly followed in all batim we sell.
The whole upper part of the  batim where the parshiot are placed is made from one piece of leather.
